o The College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a full-time Operating System/Network Analyst. Position will work a flexible schedule based on operational needs, including work during evening or weekend hours, occasional overtime, and emergency coverage in a 24/7 environment.
o This is a classified position represented by the SEIU 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.
o University of Oregon positions that are at least half-time are eligible for excellent benefits, including health and dental, employer-paid retirement, and tuition benefits for employee or an eligible dependent, sick and vacation leave.
o Due to budgetary shortfalls, the person appointed to this position may be required to take unpaid furlough days between date of hire and June 30, 2013.

TO QUALIFY YOU MUST HAVE:

... a basic foundation of knowledge in complex technical problem solving that would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, in a technical field preferably computer and information science, or equivalent technical training and/or extensive demonstrated independent technical problem solving experience.

In addition this position requires:
* Three years (five years preferred) of systems administration experience with a balance of supporting Windows domain environments, OSX, VMware, and/or LINUX in a LAN environment, including software installation and support.
* Strong foundation in Systems and Applications Administration principles, including systems automation, change management, capacity planning, documentation, etc.
* Proven track record of working well in team environments; strong customer service focus; strong communications and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

Preferred qualifications:
* Experience using clustering technology, building virtual servers and virtual environments, proficiency using scripting languages.
* Experience working in a higher education environment with a distributed governance model.
* Strong multitasking skills and proven leadership ability.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is at the academic heart of the University of Oregon's teaching and research mission. The CAS Information Services group (CASIT) is responsible for the availability and reliability of servers belonging to departments in Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and the Dean's Office. These servers host critical applications used by more than 600 faculty, 800 Graduate Teaching Fellows, 12,000 students, and 120 administrative staff. Duties include:
... operating systems and storage systems, including data replication, backup and restoration; performing tasks required to establish and maintain the correct operation of these resources, including hardware maintenance, software updates, periodic monitoring, installing new equipment and servers, including virtual servers, and ensuring system security.
... performing system management, including using system-monitoring tools; performing periodic maintenance; performing hardware and operating system upgrades; installing new servers, including virtual servers; solving interoperability problems.
... installing, maintaining, and upgrading applications; assigning user rights and privileges; working with CASIT Helpdesk and Web Services to ensure the functional performance of all custom software.
... assisting in administration of the CAS Microsoft Active Directory and Google Apps for Education presence within the University's forest; implementing group and security policies; creating disk shares and assigning quotas.
... documenting system monitoring processes; producing and maintaining clear and thorough technical documentation relating to operating procedures, changing management and hardware/software inventories of the systems and network; maintaining all licensing documentation; assisting the Systems Manager with producing and maintaining clear and thorough technical documentation as it pertains to operating procedures, change management, and hardware/software inventories of the systems and network.

1. Describe your experience as a systems administrator. Detail the kinds of systems you supported, the operating systems (include versions), virtual servers, Exchange Servers or other mail servers, the number of users served, the applications supported, and the critical nature of the work these systems supported.

2. Describe your experience with active directory and group policy. How would you map a Samba share to 100 users using group policy? How would you do it without group policy?

3. For each relevant job, detail the types of hardware recommendations you have made, including growth and expansion strategies. What are the most important factors in addressing a hardware recommendation? Give an example of a situation where it was difficult to convince your funding source, yet you successfully funded the project. What was the key to your success?

4. What is the most significant impact you've made in your current job? Explain how this was accomplished.

5. In your own words explain the difference between thick and thin VMDK provisioning? Briefly explain what iSCSI is and when and how would you use it?

6. Provide one example of server-related documentation you have written.
