Portland Engineering, Inc. - Internship (Portland, OR)

Portland Engineering, Inc. (PEI) is a multi-discipline engineering firm
specializing in complex and critical control systems for a diversity of
industrial and municipal facilities and processes. We’re seeking a
highly-motivated, independent achiever for a paid internship with the
opportunity of becoming a fulltime position in 2013. This position requires
knowledge of the most current software side networking protocols and
working on industrial control system networks, firewalls, security systems,
historians, and virtual private networks. The candidate will be expected to
understand key concepts of computer engineering while obtaining experience
in complex process engineering and control system integration focused on
municipal and industrial control systems.

This position requires coursework or experience in coding and programming
languages, intermediate data structures and algorithms, applied calculus
and physics, networking and virtualization, and designing real-time
firmware and software. Familiarity with electrical engineering technology
and the process of developing Human Machine Interfaces is preferred.

In this role the candidate will be expected to multi-task between several
projects and work with various development teams with guidance. The
candidate must be highly self-motivated with a willingness to learn new
technologies, a natural and intuitive programmer, able to work collectively
and independently, be unafraid to ask questions, and have a strong desire
to grow with the PEI engineering team.

The permanence of this position will be dictated solely by the
candidate’s demonstrated ability to meaningfully contribute to the
organizational objectives and project goals of PEI, with the expectation
that this internship will develop into a comprehensive, full time position
based on the candidate’s proven aptitude.

Key Responsibilities:
- Work with PEI team members on the development and maintenance of network
servers, operating system software, routers, switches, cabling, and other
related components.
- Maintaining and repairing network infrastructure, operating systems, and
other related components.
- Maintaining Domain Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name Server
(DNS), and Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
services, disk space allocation, wireless access privileges, network
performance monitoring systems, and system logs.
- Updating network documentation to record installations, upgrades,
configurations, etc.
- Processing work orders and maintaining records of work completed and
in-progress.
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of rapidly changing computer network
technology.
- Portable device integration into industrial control systems.

Required:
- You must be a full time college student in your senior year working
towards a degree in engineering or computer science with a minimum 3.5 GPA
or a recent graduate. Exceptional juniors may be considered.
- Solid JavaScript, .Net, HTML, CSS, and VBA.
- Understanding of relational databases, including SQL, NoSQL, and XML.
- Skilled at utilization of design programs.
- Ability to organize thoughts and project details under time constraints.
- Excellent communication, organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.

Preferred:
- Demonstrated proficiency at developing software for User interfaces and
controlling electro-mechanical systems either through coursework or prior
intern-type experience.
- Experience installing scripts and establishing build environments, video
distribution, and distributed systems.
- Exposure to schematic entry, libraries, layout, simulators, compilers,
and linkers in a Windows environment.
- Using test equipment (DMM's, etc.) to verify and troubleshoot electrical
circuitry.
- Excellent written and oral skills.
- Proficiency in MS office products.
- Hardware systems construction.
- GUI front-end development and Wiki Perl scripting.
- Electrical engineering technology course work.
- Understanding of complex industrial process systems.
