Solar Radiation Monitoring Laboratory

UO Solar Radiation Monitoring Laboratory: Developing information for a Solar Powered Future
For more than thirty years, the University of Oregon Solar Radiation Monitoring Laboratory (UO SRML) has supplied high-quality, reliable information on the Northwest’s solar resources for the purpose of planning, designing, deploying, and operating the region’s solar energy systems.  In collaboration with utilities, business, and government, the goal of the lab is to help the region leverage its solar energy potential.
Workload: 8-10 hrs/week
Duties: Website and server maintenance, some programming.
Hourly rate: $12/hour
Current activities
  • The UO Solar Radiation Monitoring Laboratory
  • Gathers solar radiation data at twenty-eight locations in the Northwest
  • Provides easy access to the solar radiation data gathered in the region
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of solar energy systems
  • Develops new tools to facilitate the deployment of solar energy systems
  • Creates solar electric education curricula for high school science students
  • Published a solar monitoring textbook, Solar and Infrared Radiation Monitoring, CRC Press, June 2012
  • Calibrates solar radiation monitoring equipment
  • Assists in design and monitoring for PV testing facilities
  • Operates a solar resource website that was contact by over 110,000 unique hosts, from 155 countries, serving nearly 300,000 page request and transferring 60 gigabytes of data in 2011.
In addition, the UO SRML is working with SuNRISE towards creation of an outdoor ISO certified PV module testing facility to augment SuNRISE’s indoor PV testing facilities.
Starting in November 2012, UO SRML will host a NREL PV module testing facility for 14 months.
